BIOGRAPHY

Winner of Prémio Jovens Músicos 2022 and Semi-finalist in the Malko Competition 2024, Miguel Sepúlveda is developing an exciting  career in a new generation of young conductors. In 2023 he conducted the BBC Philharmonic, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Casa da Música, amongst others. In Portugal, he is regularly invited back to conduct, and by the end of the 24/25 Season he is set to have conducted all Portuguese orchestras.

In the UK he also conducted the Manchester Camerata, the New Sinfonia and has  been assistant conductor in the BBC Philharmonic and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra to such conductors as Domingo Hindoyan, Omer Meir Wellber, Vasily Petrenko, Sir Mark Elder, amongst others. Also in the UK, he made his Operatic debut conducting in a production of Jonathan Dove's"Mansfield Park", having subsequently conducted Puccini's "Suor Angélica" and given the world premiere of Lima da Silva's "Rigor Mortis".

In 2024 he reached the semi final of the prestigious Malko Competition, and was also selected for the International Conducting Competition Rotterdam. His concerts have been the subject of national and international reviews, from mentions in Público, Portugal, to references in the French newspapers Le Figaro and Res Musica: "At 25, Miguel Sepúlveda made his guest conductor debut with the Gulbenkian Orchestra. His nervous direction full of elegance, (...) makes him a talent to follow very very closely... We would be wise to bring him to France without delay".

He first studied under Jean Marc Burfin, in Lisbon, and later finished his Master's at the Royal Northern College of Music with Mark Heron and Clark Rundell. In 2021 he won 2nd prize at the OCCO International Conducting Competition.
